Being in a band takes a lot of dedication and sacrifice. When we get together to rehearse, most of us travel a couple hours to get to our practice space. Rehearsing together allows us to perform better but also develop our chemistry as a band. Just like the rehearsals, when the day of a performance arrives, all of us travel several hours to get to the venues. Traveling is a huge challenge of being a musician, but it is totally worth it when we get the opportunity to share our talents to the world.
Along with traveling, we also have to load and unload our instruments and sound equipment from our vehicles. After everything is unloaded, we all work together to set up the equipment and then have a quick sound check. The biggest challenge for me is leaving my family for a certain period of time. Being on the road physically separates me from them, but when they have the chance to be present and support me at a show, it means the world. Even though Kindred is like a second family, all band members have different lives out side of it. It is definitely hard to balance both lives, but I believe that is also the beauty of it.
When I was an athlete, I always trained hard in practices so that when it came to matches, I had the same amount of energy and commitment. The same applies here as a musician. In order to make any dream a reality, it requires a great amount of sacrifice. Every time I travel, I leave behind what is most important to me - my family, and if we do not put on a good show, I feel like everything we did leading up to it was a waste of time. Every rehearsal and performance we have, I strive for excellence, which is why I give it my everything. There are days when I wake up tired or unwell, but I acknowledge what I want and it requires a lot of sacrifice. Accepting the importance of sacrifice has given me a different perspective in my musical journey. I have an incredible opportunity to create music with Kindred and it is an opportunity that others wish they had. This mentality has driven me to rehearse and perform with everything I have because I once was ‘the individual’ wishing for an opportunity.
