Due to some personal issues going on, it’s been a while since Dustin, Ryleigh, and I have gotten a chance to make some music together. This past weekend allowed us to come together and do what we love to do - make music and worship the Lord. I was extremely blessed to have shared the stage with Sail, John Waller, and the one and only, Jason Crabb this past Saturday. It was a neat experience to be a part of a fundraiser that would help local youth in the area attend Christian camps throughout the summer. Since I worked as a camp counselor for a Christian youth camp a few years ago, I appreciated the purpose behind the event.

Since it was a strip back set, I decided to play my version of a cajón cocktail kit. The kit consists of a cajón, a snare drum, hi-hats, a ride cymbal, and a clap stack. I use my cajón as a bass drum with my kick pedal facing backwards. Depending on the song we are playing, I use a variety of sticks.

It’s different, but this is the sound I am drawn to at this moment! Remember, it is important to be authentic and different. As drummers and musicians, you have to discover “your” unique sound!

We were on stage for a little over an hour. It is cool to know that we opened for the one and only, Jason Crabb! After we finished our set, we got to watch him and his band perform. My favorite that he played was “Sometimes I Cry”. It gave me John Meyer vibes. Which everyone likes John Meyer right? If not, you should re-examine yourself (lol)! At the end of the concert, we all got together and chatted for a bit. We talked about life on the road as a musician and how we get spread too thin. Just like Jason Crabb shared with us, “To make wine, part of the process requires you to pressure and squeeze the grapes. The same applies to us. Sometimes we cannot become the person God wants us to be unless we are pressured or squeezed by the challenges we face. It may be painful for a time, but the result will be worth it. It is in those moments where God is making something beautiful out of us”. To add on to that, I also believe it is in those moments - where we are pressured and squeezed - God has His arms open for us to run to Him. If you are reading this and are having a bad day due to circumstances in your life, remember, joy is on the horizon! Stay strong!
