If you are unsure what cymbals are, they are percussion instruments that are made of metal alloys. Cymbals are rounded plates that have a small hole drilled through the bell which allows them to be mounted on a stand. Unlike drums, cymbals cannot be tuned to fit different musical genres. It is recommended to tune your drum kit to the style of music you play, but cymbals do not offer that luxury. Due to this, it is important to choose a great set of cymbals that compliment what you play. My recommendation is to choose cymbals that are excellent quality but also versatile incase you do play a variety of genres. A drummer can have an incredibly tuned kit, but if he/she has low quality cymbals, it will hinder the overall sound. Cymbals play an important role in a drummer’s kit, therefore choose wisely!
I remember when I was a freshman in college, I was in the market for new drum gear. I did not have the best sounding snare drum or set of cymbals, which was why I needed an upgrade. As a college student, I did not have much money to purchase a set of cymbals and a snare drum so I had to be wise in which percussion instrument to invest in first. Around that time (Spring 2018), I met a famous Contemporary Christian Artist, Aaron Shust, and his Musical Director, Jonathan Dimmel. It was an incredible experience meeting both men, but what I enjoyed the most was getting the opportunity to talk to Jonathan as he is also a touring drummer. I figured I would ask a professional what he would invest in first, a snare drum or a set of cymbals. Without hesitation, Jonathan recommended to invest in a set of cymbals first and then a snare drum. Jonathan also gave me a few cymbal companies to consider, one being Heartbeat Percussion. A couple weeks later, I purchased my first cymbal from Heartbeat Percussion. The cymbal I bought has served me well and is still in great condition five years later.
Being Kindred's drummer inspired me to buy another set of cymbals in case any of them ever cracked while performing. It is also a great idea to have extra cymbals on hand that way you have a variety of sounds to choose from. Down below is the 24'' Jazz Ride I purchased a couple weeks ago. If you are in the market and looking for good quality cymbals, I highly recommend Heartbeat Percussion. You will receive an excellent sound from the cymbals but also incredible customer service. If you have not already, make sure you go to my video section so you can watch a short reel of me opening up my new cymbals for the first time!
