My mentality before my first rehearsal with Kindred was tense. I was selected to play music with an old friend I have not spoken to in years, and also perform alongside three other strangers. To make the matter worse, I have felt disconnected from the country music industry for quite some time. For nearly three years, I was only accustomed to leading Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) and teaching nursery rhymes that I composed for my elementary students. Despite how I felt, deep down I believed God put me in those situations to prepare me for what was next.
Being an elementary music teacher gave me the opportunity to expand my creativity. I was able to create enjoyable lessons that would help foster a love of music in my students. By volunteering at my church, I learned it was more about how you represent God and His kingdom than what you know behind an instrument. Working as a music educator and volunteering as a musician at my church gave me a better appreciation of my musicianship. Drummers tend to have a bad reputation because we are often associated as loud and lazy. However, being a drummer is an art. Being a drummer is about having technique, rhythm, coordination, and blending all of the surrounding instruments together, creating one cohesive sound.
After much deep thought, I no longer felt tense because my musical career has been built on those qualities. I am definitely not a master at the drum kit, but I consistently strive to get better every single practice and performance. That being said, my first rehearsal with Kindred was a great time, and what is even better is to be alongside an old friend to make this dream a possibility.
